THE HUMAN AT THIS END OF THE LEAD

Hi, I’m Patrick.
Let’s understand your dog.

Clear communication, practical training and attention to the dog in front of us.

Experience built
around real dogs.

I’m the sole operator behind Barks & Recreation, an independent dog-training business in Brisbane.

I’ve worked hands-on with thousands of dogs through daycare handling, private training and behaviour work. Working with a wide range of dogs has sharpened how I read body language, group dynamics and the early signs of stress or rising arousal.

It has also taught me that the same exercise can look very different from one dog to the next.

I want to understand you, too: your goals, your routines and what is realistic to practise. Both sides of the lead matter.

HOW I APPROACH TRAINING

Understanding first.
Practical training next.

Read the dog

Body language, motivation, stress and the environment help us choose what to practise. If the setup is too difficult for learning, we change the setup.

Communicate and reward clearly

We use clear cues and reward markers, then choose food, play, activities or access to things your dog values to make useful responses worth repeating.

Build sensible structure

Management, boundaries and practical setups help prevent repeated problems and create better learning opportunities while allowing room for recovery.

Change the experience

Where appropriate, counter-conditioning and gradual exposure help build different associations at an intensity your dog can manage. Their response guides the pace.

Coach both ends of the lead

I demonstrate what I am seeing, explain the practical details and coach you through the timing and handling you can use between sessions.

Clear about
the practical details.

We’ll discuss proposed exercises and equipment before using them, including their purpose and how your dog responds.

Progress depends on the behaviour, environment, learning history and practice. We look at what is changing, what is still difficult and adjust the plan when needed.

BOTH ENDS OF THE LEAD

Let’s make the
next step clearer.

Tell me what life with your dog looks like right now. You don’t need the right label—or a perfectly behaved dog—to get in touch.
