REACTIVITY & BEHAVIOUR

Difficult behaviour.
A clearer way forward.

When your dog’s behaviour starts shaping your whole day, understanding it is a useful place to start.

Private training · Brisbane

A handler and dog calmly observing another dog at a comfortable distance.

You may be doing a lot just to get through the day.

Choosing quieter routes. Keeping visitors away. Watching every doorway. Worrying about what happens when you leave.

You don’t have to explain it in training terms. I want to understand what happens, what your dog is finding difficult and what would make life more manageable for both of you.

Training goal: Work toward easier disengagement from triggers, quicker recovery and more manageable everyday routines.

FINDING YOUR STARTING POINT

This might be your starting point if…

  • Your dog barks or lunges around dogs or people.
  • Visitors, handling or sudden movement lead to worry or tension.
  • Excitement builds quickly and becomes hard to interrupt.
  • Food, toys or resting places are being guarded.
  • Your dog struggles when left alone.

WHAT THE WORK CAN LOOK LIKE

Understand the pattern. Change the experience.

Look at the whole picture

Triggers, body language, routine, learning history and recovery all help us understand the behaviour. Health and discomfort may also need attention.

Make the situation manageable

Distance, space, routines and suitable setups can reduce repeated difficult moments and make room for learning.

Teach another response

We build useful skills such as disengaging, returning to you and settling, alongside carefully paced behaviour work.

Carefully paced, not pushed into a reaction.

Where appropriate, counter-conditioning helps a dog build different associations with something they find difficult. Gradual exposure changes the intensity in manageable steps.

Your dog’s response guides the pace. Some concerns need veterinary or specialist support alongside training; I’ll be clear when that is the appropriate next step.
